Save Claygate Green Belt - Public Meeting 16th July 2026

On the evening of Thursday 16th July, an estimated 400 local residents packed into the Holy Trinity Church, Claygate for the Save Claygate Greenbelt public meeting, demonstrating the strength of feeling across our community against proposals to build on Claygate's Green Belt.

Hosted by the Claygate Parish Council and the Save Claygate Greenbelt committee, the meeting brought together representatives from the Parish Council, East Surrey councillors and campaign organisers to provide residents with the latest information on the proposed developments and the planning process.

What quickly became clear was the overwhelming mood in the room. Residents were not prepared to quietly accept the loss of the countryside that surrounds our village. Speaker after speaker reflected the concerns shared by hundreds of local people, from the impact on traffic, schools and healthcare to the permanent loss of open countryside and wildlife habitats.

The public Q&A session was particularly powerful. Residents raised thoughtful, passionate and, at times, emotional questions about the future of Claygate, expressing frustration that local communities so often feel decisions are made for them rather than with them. Many voiced the view that the Green Belt should not be sacrificed for developments they believe are driven by commercial interests rather than genuine local need.

Throughout the evening there was a clear message: the people of Claygate expect their voices to be heard.

The meeting also highlighted the growing momentum behind the campaign. What began as a small group of concerned residents has developed into a well-organised community movement supported by volunteers, local councillors and hundreds of residents determined to protect the character of our village.

The size of the audience and the passion shown throughout the evening sent a clear message. Claygate cares deeply about its Green Belt, and our community will continue to make its views known throughout the planning process.
